Happy birthday chiropractic! Sept. 18th marks the birthday of the unique and amazing profession of chiropractic. In Davenport, Iowa in 1895, D.D. Palmer delivered the first chiropractic adjustment to Harvey Lillard.
Mr. Lillard who was a deaf janitor, told Palmer that he lost his hearing many years earlier after he had
stooped and felt a pop in his upper back. Upon examination, D.D. found a misalignment in Lillard’s spine
and adjusted it. Shortly after the adjustment, Mr. Lillard’s hearing was restored! A profession was born.
Naturally enough, Palmer developed his philosophy relating the spine to nervous system function and
human health and expression. Today, chiropractic is the second largest non medical healing profession in
North America.
When I was growing up on Long Island, I had never even heard of chiropractic care. It wasn't until I
was in college in my premedical education that I encountered my first chiropractor. He was my anatomy
and physiology teacher. I quizzed him for weeks about his profession and really didn't understand. After
studying the spine and the nervous system, the light bulb finally went on. I quickly decided that I should
work in his office and see what it is that he does. He cared for newborns, kids, adults and even a 98 year
old man! The results he got were amazing! After a short one month I change my major from premed to
pre-chiropractic and the rest is history! I attended Life Chiropractic College in Atlanta, Georgia and have
been practicing chiropractic in the Philadelphia area for almost 25 years!
My children have benefited greatly by this decision! For healthy children who rarely suffer from the childhood illnesses that their peers endure on a daily basis.
I am been so lucky to have made this profession mine. Chiropractic is more than a job, it is a lifestyle!
