Since graduating chiropractic in 1988 one of the most common injuries that I have treated is sciatica. It seems that sciatica is an epidemic in today's society. Sciatica is basically when you are having low back pain that radiates into your hips your buttocks and your legs and sometimes even your feet and toes.
Most people when they come into my office ask me what they did to cause this problem.
My reply is that it can be caused by a multitude of things. If you have been in motor vehicle accident you can have sciatica. If you were a weekend warrior and playing sports and you over do it and get hurt you could have sciatica. You could just be vacuuming, or house cleaning or lifting boxes or even a bag of pet food. I have even had people come into my office and tell me that they were brushing their teeth and BAM they get a shooting pain from their back all the way down to their toes. I have other people that got a sharp stabbing pain while they were doing dishes.
There are a multitude of reasons why you can have sciatica. And sciatica is not picky.
It can be a problem for people that are athletes and very much in shape, it can affect couch potatoes, housewives and even you are a CEO of a major companies you can have sciatica.
Regardless of how you got sciatic pain it is imperative that you get it taken care of as soon as possible. It has been my experience that if left untreated sciatica pain will just get worse over time.
Be smart and call your family doctor or Chiropractor immediately when you experience sciatica. Most of the time your family doctor will prescribe you muscle relaxants and anti inflammatory medications and possibly order x-rays if they think it is necessary. Sometimes this is all that is needed for your sciatica pain to go away. But throughout all my years of practice it seems that more often than not some type of Chiropractic therapy and physical therapy is necessary.
You should definitely contact your doctors especially if you have been having pain for more than a week or two.
You may require chiropractic therapy, spinal traction decompression therapy, ultrasound therapy, cold laser therapy, electric muscle stimulation and even therapy consisting of specific exercises to relieve your sciatica pain.
